Folklore says a mischievous devil was cast out of heaven for playing pranks. When he hit the ground, he injured his leg and started to limp. People now dress up to tell the story. They wear fierce, horned papier-mâché masks with large, protruding teeth and exaggerated features with brightly colored, shiny, baggy pants and capes are covered in small mirrors, ribbons, and jingle bells. They Carry a vejiga (traditionally a dried and inflated animal bladder, now often a rubber balloon). They use it to playfully swat spectators on the legs and ankles as they dance through the streets.
